In Memoriam of Two Neighborhood Legal Clinic Volunteers

Juan Gabriel Ibarra died November 18, 2004 in a car accident four miles east of Cle Elum, WA. Gabe was a dedicated volunteer attorney for the Bilingual Spanish Clinic and volunteered the night before he died.

Gabe began his career as a teacher with an M.A. in Latin American studies. He graduated with his J.D. in June 1999. Following graduation, Gabe clerked for Judge Marlin J. Appelwick in the Washington Court of Appeals and then joined the firm of Velikanje, Morre & Shore in Yakima. In February 2003, Gabe opened his own law firm in Seattle and practiced there and in eastern Washington.

Bilingual Spanish Clinic Coordinator, Catalina Cantu said, “I remember that first observation shift Gabe did with me at the legal clinic. His sincerity and legal acumen demonstrated to me that he would be a positive asset to La Clinica. Gabe was sincerely dedicated to the Latino community in this state. He had a great sense of humor. I could always count on him and will miss him.”

Helena Tsenzana died January 1, 2005 following a long battle with emphysema. Helena volunteered as a Clinic Assistant for the Southeast Legal Clinic in Rainier Valley since 1987.

Fighting emphysema since 1995, Helena consistently made the difficult journey to the clinic on her scheduled nights because she loved it. Always anxious to help legal clinic clients find additional help, she was a treasured asset to the legal clinic program.

Volunteer attorney Dave Richardson said, “I served with Helena (at the clinic) since 1992. Helena is what the clinic is all about. She had a giving spirit and a sense of justice that she put into practice. She will be sorely missed.” n
