Ron Mattson
King County Bar Association’s Community Legal Services Committee recognizes Ron Mattson as March 2005’s Volunteer of the Month. Ron has been involved with the pro bono programs at the King County Bar Association since 1993 and has taken several contested family law cases.
Over the past year, Ron has taken two family law cases, both representing domestic violence survivors. In one case, Ron represented and successfully negotiated a dissolution settlement for a woman whose husband threatened to kill her. In the second case, Ron represented the mother in a motion for reconsideration following trial in a parenting plan case.
In addition to his family law direct representation pro bono work, Ron’s pro bono activities include volunteering at the South King County and Southeast (Seattle) Legal Clinics, participating in the KCBA Family Law Mentor Program, the “Finish Your Divorce” classes, and acting as a Family Law Settlement Conference Master. Ron usually has two direct representation pro bono cases open at a time.
Ron is a sole practitioner in Renton. His current practice has been open since 1992. Before that Ron worked in Aircraft Contracts at Boeing for 12 years, was in private practice in Bellevue, and practiced law in Alaska. His current practice focuses primarily on family law, but he also does criminal defense, estate planning, probate and commercial law.
Ron states that his greatest satisfaction comes from the gratitude he feels from the clients he has helped, especially those who were unable to do it themselves and were without the means to hire an attorney to do it for them.
“There is a tremendous need out there [for pro bono representation]. As simple as we try to make the legal system, it is still very daunting and confusing [for the po se litigant],” says Ron.
Congratulations to Ron for being selected as the March 2005 Volunteer for the Month and many thanks for his continued dedication to serve clients in need who can not afford legal representation.
