    KCBA Leadership: Nominating Process Underway

    By Alice C. Paine

The King County Bar Association is recognized as one of the outstanding local bars in the nation. This recognition is due to the exceptional leadership provided by active members. The Nomina-ting Committee is working now to identify candidates for the Board of Trustees and Officers with terms beginning July 1, 2005.

Leaving the Board at the end of June will be President John Cary, Treasurer Karen Jones, Central District Trustees Mark Aoki-Fordham, David Reed and Hal Hodgins; South District Trustee Hon. Mark Eide; and East District Trustee Rosemarie Warren LeMoine. Secretary Bonnie Glenn leaves the Secretary position but remains on the Board as a Trustee. We are seeking two candidates for each of these vacated positions.

Probably the most important question people have about serving as a trustee or officer is the time commit-ment. The Board meets twice a month, first and third Wednesdays, over lunch (12:10Ð 1:30 pm), and regular attendance is expected. Time commitment may be 6-8 hours/month, depending on the extent to which one commits to additional tasks. There is a planning session on a Saturday in late May or early June. Officers meet on the Wednesdays where there is not a board meeting, so the time commitment for them is perhaps 12 hours/month, again depending on tasks that each may accept. The Secretary prepares minutes for each meeting during that person’s first year on the Board. Expectations of each position are detailed at www.kcba.org; just click on “About KCBA.”

The Board is a very congenial group and seem to enjoy their work together very much-attend one and judge for yourself! Coming meetings are January 5 and 19 at noon.

If you are considering offering yourself as a possible nominee but have questions, call or email Alice Paine at (206) 267-7015 or alicep@kcba.org. You can also contact Tom Kelly, Chair and immediate past-president of KCBA at (206) 370-6683 with any ideas. It is helpful to us to learn a little about the nominees and why you feel they would be a helpful addition to the KCBA Board. Do not hesitate to recommend yourself!
