Support Fund Established for Lawyer and Gun Victim Kevin Jung
By Joe Koplin
Attorney Kevin Jung, age 44, sustained life-threatening injuries on November 3, when he was shot while leaving his Bellevue office to attend a court hearing in Everett. The alleged assailant, Mill Creek attorney William C. Joice, is being held on $5 million bail on a charge of first-degree attempted murder.
For the past year and a half, Mr. Jung and Mr. Joice have been opposing counsel in a contentious civil suit alleging fraud in the sale of a Korean gift shop. At the present time, Kevin remains hospitalized in intensive care at Overlake Hospital. Although he continues to show signs of improvement, it is unlikely that he will ever again be capable of practicing law.
Kevin has been the sole support of his wife and two young boys. This assault has inflicted severe emotional and financial hardship on his family. To mitigate the impact, the “Kevin Jung Family Support Fund” has been established at U.S. Bank to help the family with ongoing expenses. Donations can be made through any U.S. Bank branch.
Born in South Korea, Kevin grew up in Hawaii and attended law school at the University of Washington. His practice served a largely Korean clientele and focused on a wide range of business and immigration matters. He has been a leader in the local Korean-American community, writing legal advice columns and appearing frequently as a legal commentator on the local Korean cable TV station.
Eight months ago Kevin began renting office space from my firm. A transactional attorney, quiet, dignified, and completely dedicated to his family and to his clients, he is the last person we would have expected to become the target of such senseless hatred.
As the victim of a gun crime allegedly committed at the hands of another attorney, this crime strikes all of us. I urge the legal community to express its collective shock, outrage, grief and sympathy for Kevin and his family by making the most generous contribution possible to this fund. Your generosity will aid his family immeasurably at this difficult time.
