Volunteer of the Month

    Harold Fardal

King County Bar Association’s Community Legal Services Committee would like to recognize Harold (Hal) Fardal as October 2004’s Volunteer of the Month. Hal is honored for his continuing dedication to pro bono work with the Volunteer Legal Services Program. VLS is a KCBA program that refers low-income individuals with civil legal problems to volunteer attorneys.

Hal has been a volunteer for VLS for many years. In addition to providing legal advice and consultation for pro bono estate planning cases, he also serves as a mentor for new VLS volunteer attorneys. Hal was a presenter at two wills clinics at the Asian Counseling Referral Service. In this capacity, Hal informed participants about estate planning issues and also helped them execute documents. Most recently, Hal participated in the Starbucks Pro Bono Estate Planning Project. Along with co-presenter David Meyer, Hal trained Starbucks attorneys and legal assistants on wills and probate issues. Hal and David will also be on-going mentors for the Starbucks attorneys once they begin taking pro bono estate planning cases for VLS.

Hal is a senior partner of the law firm Keller Rohrback and has been practicing law for forty-six years. He believes very strongly in pro bono work. “There is a large segment of society that cannot afford appropriate legal representation and it is a lawyer’s ethical obligation to help these individuals,” says Hal.

Hal is a graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. He received his M.A. degree in Scandinavian Area Studies from the University of Wisconsin following a year in Oslo, Norway on a Fulbright Scholarship. After serving a two-year stint in the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps in Germany, Hal attended Yale Law School where he received his bachelor of law degree.

In his spare time, Hal is a committed power-walker (after many years of being a marathon runner) and a manager/ player for his law firm’s co-ed slow-pitch softball team. In addition, he is a classical music enthusiast.

Congratulations to Hal Fardal for being selected as the October 2004 Volunteer of the Month and many thanks for his continuing support of pro bono work.
