Summer Research Connections
By Jean Holcomb
If you’re at your office racing through a research project to catch some precious time in the sun, you could be overlooking a resource that could put you outside sooner. If you’re already away from your office and find that you need a quick answer to a legal research problem so that you can enjoy your day in the sun, a connection to a helpful resource could be right at hand. For both of theses situations, the KCLL staff can help speed your escape to the outdoors in a variety of ways.
When time is of the essence, here are some options to consider. You can call the reference desks at our Seattle Library at (206) 296-0940 and our Regional Justice Center Library at (206) 205-2900 to speak with a reference librarian who will be able to direct you to an appropriate resource. You can utilize our KCLL Delivers document delivery service to have documents faxed or emailed to you wherever you’re located.
When you’re out of town, you’re not out of luck! The Library’s www.kcll.org web site contains links to online resources and web research guides prepared by the staff. The Library provides email reference service from our website. Monday through Friday, you can ask for help via the website and chat live with librarians who monitor the chat service from 10 am until 4 pm. This service is offered in collaboration with the Washington State Law Library.
To help you take maximum advantage of our long hours of summer sunshine, remember, the Law Library offers an array of tools and services to help you speed up your research process. On the phone or on the web, let us be your summer connection to legal resources.
Seattle Library Returns to the Courthouse: After more than 17 months in the County Administration Building, the Library looks forward to our return to the sixth floor of the Courthouse. The Seismic Project management team hasn’t given us the exact dates for the move yet, but we expect that our return will be scheduled in late August or early September. The Seattle Library will be closed for a week to accomplish the move. As soon as we have the dates, this information will be posted on the Library’s web site and announced on a bulletin board in the Library.
85th Anniversary Campaign Progress Report: In the April issue of the Bar Bulletin, the Library announced the start of a capital campaign drive under the leadership of Honorary Co-Chairs Norm Maleng, King County Prosecutor and Llewelyn G. Pritchard, a partner at Helsell Fetterman LLP. The goal of the drive is to raise $85,000.00 to provide funds necessary to remodel the Library’s space when we return to the Courthouse this summer. The funds raised will be used for furniture, fixtures, lighting, a new service counter, and additional technology. To learn about the progress
we’re making toward our goal, visit the Library’s web site at www. kcll.org/fund
raising where you’ll find more details about the campaign including an up to date record of gifts and pledges received. If you haven’t yet made a gift or pledge to the Campaign, you’ll find a downloadable copy of the Campaign pledge card on our web site.
Internet Class Topic: While the Library will offer training programs in July and August, the Thursday lunch-break class will not be held again until September 16. For information about the training, contact Rita Kaiser at (206) 296-0940. For information about additional training opportunities, view the monthly training calendar on the library’s web page at www.kcll.org.
Gifts: the Library appreciates the receipt of a gift to the collection from Mary Whisner.
New Book List: for a monthly update of new books added to the collection, please check the library’s web site at www.kcll.org or pick up a copy at the reference desk of the listing arranged by subject. n
