18th Annual Goldmark Award Luncheon Announced
The Legal Foundation of Washington will present the 2004 Charles A. Goldmark Distinguished Service Award to David J. Burman at the 18th Annual Goldmark Award Luncheon. The luncheon will be held Friday, February 20, 2004 at the Emerald Ballroom of the Red Lion Hotel on Fifth Avenue between 12:00pm and 1:30 pm.
The Legal Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that has distributed over $70,000,000 for legal aid to the poor since 1985.
Mr. Burman will receive the Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his pro bono representation in Brown v. Legal Foundation of Washington. His journey began in a federal district courtroom in Seattle, detoured twice through the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and ended March 26, 2003 with a successful conclusion before the U.S. Supreme Court that upheld the constitutionality of our state’s IOLTA program. Nationally, IOLTA programs provide over one-third of the funding for civil legal aid to the poor.
Dave Burman is a partner with Perkins Coie and has represented the Legal Foundation on a pro bono basis since the lawsuit was filed in 1997.
The Goldmark Award honors the memory of Charles A. Goldmark, Seattle attorney, community leader, and ardent supporter of access to justice. Mr. Goldmark served as the Legal Foundation’s president at the time of the tragic assault that led to his death in 1986.
The Legal Foundation of Washington is a 501(c) (3) organization.
