The KCBA Guardianship and Elder Law Section Announces Nonprofit Grant Program

The practitioners of the KCBA Guardianship and Elder Law Section recognize the importance for all seniors, vulnerable adults and incapacitated persons to have access to legal services. While financial constraints and/or physical limitations impede seniors, vulnerable adults and incapacitated persons in seeking legal services, it is recognized that community services exist to assist these people with their legal issues. Therefore, the KCBA Guardianship and Elder Law Section has established a grant program to financially assist with the continued operation of these community service programs.

All currently operating programs offered by non-profit organizations that provide legal services in King County are encouraged to apply for a grant. Beneficiaries of the current programs must be King County residents who are senior citizens, vulnerable adults and/or incapacitated persons.

The total amount available for grants in the current fiscal year is $25,000.00 and the average grant is anticipated to be $5,000.00. The award and the amount of the grant will be at the sole discretion of the Grants Committee.

Grant information will be sent out in August 2003. Grant applications must be received by October 15, 2003. The grant will be distributed in one installment in January 2004. Award recipients must submit a “Mid-Year Program Evaluation” form and may be asked to make a presentation at a meeting of the Guardianship and Elder Law Section.

The KCBA Guardianship and Elder Law Section is a division of the King County Bar Association. The majority of Section members are legal practitioners practicing in areas of law serving senior citizens, vulnerable adults and incapacitated persons of King County. These areas of law may include: estate planning; guardianship; Medicare/Medicaid; elder abuse and probate. The Section began in the early 1990Õs and is currently comprised of 157 members.
