The purpose of the Neighborhood Legal Clinics program (NLC) is to offer free, limited legal advice and referrals to King County residents and Washington State residents with legal issues in King County who might otherwise have no access to the legal system. It is a goal of the program to make the clinics accessible regardless of barriers such as income, education, language or disability.

WHAT WE DO

Provide FREE 30 minute consultations with an attorney at 39 locations across King County. Attorneys determine whether the client has a legal problem, suggest possible options, and provide appropriate referrals. These attorneys will not represent you in court. NLC attorneys may not have expertise in all areas of the law, but they will make every attempt to answer questions accurately.

• Clients who need further legal assistance may be referred to Volunteer Legal Services, the Lawyer Referral Service and other legal or law-related agencies in the community.
• NLC is a limited legal service and should not be considered a substitute for representation.

• Provide representation in court
• Help those living outside King County (unless they have a legal issue within King County)
• Give legal advice over the phone

To make an appointment call 206- 267-7070 Tuesday - Thursday from 9:00am- 12:00 pm. Please note, appointments are scheduled no more than 7 days in advance. The scheduling line receives a high volume of calls so you may experience wait times between 5 to 10 minutes.

To make an appointment at a family law clinic call 206- 267-7070 Tuesday - Thursday from 9:00am- 12:00 pm.  Family Law clinics fill up quickly. In order to sucessfully schedule an appointment, we advise you to call at 9:00am on the recommended day listed below each clinic. When you call you will be making an appointment one week in advance.

Homeless Legal Clinics 

The Aloha Inn 

2nd Tuesday of the month, 6:00-8:00 PM

Downtown Emergency Service Center

4th Thursday of the month, 2:00-4:00 PM

Seattle Emergency Housing Services

3rd Wednesday of the month, 3:30-5:00 PM

Plymouth Housing Group

Every other month, 12:00-2:00 PM

HOW TO PREPARE

1. Decide on the desired outcome or goal.
2. Schedule an appointment at a Neighborhood Legal Clinic.
3. Write a list of specific questions for the attorney.
4. Bring to the clinic appointment:
   • Agreements or contracts (signed or proposed)
   • Written rules or policies
   • Court orders
   • Court papers served on you or that you filed with the court
   • All letters or emails to and from person or business with whom you have the disagreement
   • Specific paperwork related to the case. For example, employee handbook, parenting plan, child support order, protection order, lease, rental agreement
5. Organize any paperwork from most recent on the top to oldest at the bottom.
6. Identify all deadlines.
7. Tell the legal clinic volunteer about these deadlines.
8. Remember you only have 30 minutes. Be prepared to tell the history of the legal issue to the legal clinic volunteer .
9. If your legal issue is vacating your criminal record please bring your Washington Access to Criminal History report.

Neighborhood Legal Clinics are drug, alcohol, weapon, violence, aggressive behavior, and threat free .
