January 2010 Bar Bulletin

Bar Talk

By Karen Sutherland

The celebrations on New Year’s Eve always leave me to expect some sort of rebirth or renewal to occur the next day. Then I wake up on January 1st and it’s still cold and dark, with a long way to go before I can walk to work in daylight. But hope abounds; it’s only six weeks until pitchers and catchers report for spring training.

New Shareholders

June Campbell, Ryan McBride and Jeffrey Odom have been elected to shareholder status at Lane Powell. Campbell is a member of the firm’s Litigation Group and focuses her practice on railroad litigation, professional malpractice litigation, products liability, premises liability and insurance coverage matters. McBride practices in the areas of complex commercial litigation, and class action litigation and appeals. Odom focuses his practice on complex litigation, toxic torts and product liability. Before joining Lane Powell, Odom was an associate with Williams, Kastner & Gibbs and with a law firm in Atlanta. He is licensed to practice in both Washington and Georgia.

Associate Additions

Erin Garvey and Tiffany Scott have joined Lane Powell as associates. Prior to joining Lane Powell, Garvey worked as an associate for Sidley Austin LLP, where she researched and drafted motions, memoranda and other court filings. She is practicing in Lane Powell’s Complex Litigation Practice Group. Scott, who is practicing in Lane Powell’s Intellectual Property and Technology Group, previously worked as an associate for Mayer Brown LLP, where she focused her practice on copyright, trademark and trade secret matters.

Katie Fawcett has joined the Rocke Law Group as an associate. She will focus her practice on commercial and employment litigation.

Brenna Holscher has joined David J. Balint, PLLC as an associate attorney. Holscher will focus her practice on personal injury and general civil litigation.

Stephen McKay has joined Karr Tuttle Campbell as an associate. McKay works in business, real estate and employment law, as well as other areas of practice.

Maren Norton and Erin Lennon have joined the Seattle office of Stoel Rives LLP as associates. Norton is returning to the firm as an associate in the Litigation Group, where she previously practiced from 2004-08. She has a broad range of trial and appellate experience in commercial contracts, environmental regulation, land use, forest products and torts. Lennon is an associate in the firm’s Employee Benefits Group. Her practice includes all areas of employee benefits law.

Of Counsel and Special Counsel

Priya Sinha Cloutier has joined Karr Tuttle Campbell’s Business Department as special counsel to the firm. Cloutier, who was formerly the managing partner for Cloutier & Engle, is a member of the U.S. Patent Bar. She limits her practice to intellectual property.

Stephanie Stephens has joined Lane Powell as counsel to the firm in its Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights Practice Group. Stephens was previously with Winston & Strawn, LLP where she focused her practice on structuring, negotiating and documenting secured and unsecured credit facilities.

Honors and Awards

Due to incomplete information in a press release Bar Talk received, other firms involved in providing free legal assistance to Holocaust survivors living in Washington were omitted from mention in the discussion of Foster Pepper’s receipt of the Jewish Family Service of Seattle 2009 Outstanding Service Award. Other firms involved in organizing that project and/or assisting Holocaust victims with completing the German government forms to apply for compensation and which shared the award equally with Foster Pepper include: Davis Wright Tremaine, LLP; Perkins Coie, LLP; Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati; Stoel Rives, LLP; Cozen & O’Connor; and Garvey Schubert and Barer.

The University of Washington Law School’s 15th Annual PILA auction will be held at the W Hotel on Friday, February 19. For those of you who were wondering (I was), PILA stands for Public Interest Law Association.

The Legal Foundation of Washington recently elected its officers and welcomed new and returning members to the Board of Trustees for 2010. Rima J. Alaily, with Microsoft Corporation’s office of Law & Corporate Affairs, was unanimously elected by the Board of Trustees as president for the coming year. Two other King County attorneys — Richard Mitchell of the Summit Law Group and Martin S. Garfinkel of Schroeter Goldmark & Bender — were appointed to serve two-year terms on the board by the Washington Supreme Court and the Washington State Bar Association Board of Governors, respectively. The Foundation was established in 1985 at the direction of the Washington Supreme Court to support legal aid and law-related education through the Interest on Lawyers’/Limited Practice Officers’ Trust Account (IOLTA) program. The Foundation is a Supporter of the Alliance for Equal Justice, a statewide network of organizations providing legal aid to those with nowhere else to turn.

Dennis E. McLean, who was a partner at Davis Wright Tremaine, passed away suddenly of heart failure at the age of 55. McLean handled numerous high-profile, complex real estate transactions in Seattle and held many leadership roles in his nearly 30-year tenure with the firm.
