A Dean Search Committee is hard at work soliciting nominations and applications to be the next dean of Seattle University School of Law.
“Our next dean will be an accomplished leader with a demonstrated record of effective management, will have a commitment to the values and mission of the law school, and will possess the drive, energy and imagination to lead us as we continue our strong upward trajectory,” said Professor Janet Ainsworth, co-chair of the search committee.
“The law school has become increasingly recognized as an innovative leader in legal education, respected for our mission of educating outstanding lawyers for a just and humane world. There is a real sense of excitement and energy at the law school about the many projects, centers and initiatives that faculty and students have launched here.”
The committee expects to review applications during the fall semester, with finalists for the position invited for two-day campus interviews later this year. Nominations and confidential inquiries are welcomed and may be directed to Prof. Ainsworth (jan@seattleu.edu; 206-398-4017) or co-chair Prof. David Skover (davidskover@seattleu.edu; 206-398-4011).

Annette Clark, who has served as vice dean of the Seattle University School of Law for several years, is serving as interim dean. Clark has served as the chief academic officer for the School of Law, overseeing the academic program, including the curriculum centers and institutes, as well as the faculty, from 1997–2001 and then again from 2005–2009. After receiving an M.D. with honors from the University of Washington School of Medicine and her J.D. summa cum laude from the SU School of Law, she joined the School of Law faculty in 1989.
“I am both extraordinarily honored and humbled by the opportunity to lead this school that I love for the coming year,” Clark said. “I look forward to working with faculty, staff, students and alumni as we build upon our foundation of education for excellence and search for the next outstanding dean for the School of Law.”
Clark teaches, writes and consults in the areas of medical liability and bioethics and is a frequent national and local lecturer on bioethics-related topics. She has published articles in the New York University Law Review, the Georgetown Law Journal and the Tulane Law Review, among others. She volunteers with the Multi-Care Institutional Review Board, which is dedicated to ensuring patient safety in human subjects research, and the Safe Crossings Foundation Board, whose mission is to fund and support grief counseling for children in King County.
President Stephen Sundborg named Clark the 2008–09 James B. McGoldrick, S.J., Fellow, which is awarded to a faculty member or administrator who best exemplifies commitment to students and to the values of a Jesuit education. She also has received the Seattle Journal for Social Justice Faculty Award in 2005, the Dean’s Medal in 2006 and the Outstanding Faculty Award in December 2007.
