KCBA Announces Award Recipients

KCBA’s Annual Awards Dinner will be held Wednesday, June 24 at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel to recognize the personal and professional achievements of outstanding attorneys and judges in the King County community.

The evening will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 6:30. The event will again feature a multi-media presentation to honor each award recipient. A perennial favorite, the fundraising Auction for Justice, will benefit the King County Bar Foundation.

This year’s award recipients are: Outstanding Lawyer — Christopher Bayley: Bayley, a former King County prosecuting attorney, is the chairman of Dylan Bay Companies. After serving as the county’s top prosecutor from 1970–79 and a three-year stint with Perkins Coie, Bayley entered the corporate world. In 1998, he and Steven Brui formed the Resource Action Council, which became Stewardship Partners in 2002. Bayley serves on the board of directors at Discovery Institute, Classic KING-FM, Scenic America and the E.B. Dunn Historic Garden Trust.

Outstanding Judge — The Hon. LeRoy McCullough: Judge McCullough has served on the King County Superior Court bench since 1989. Judge McCullough is a lifetime member of the NAACP and a trustee of the King County Library System. He helped create the Seattle Youth and Law Forum, which celebrates its 18th anniversary this year. He also serves as the chair of the Education Subcommittee of the Washington State Minority and Justice Commission.

William L. Dwyer Outstanding Jurist — The Hon. Ronald Gould: Judge Gould was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 1999. A former president of the Washington State Bar Association and former professor at the University of Washington School of Law, Judge Gould has served on the Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, on the board of the Economic Development Council of King County, and as a trustee of Bellevue Community College and the MetroCenter YMCA.

Outstanding Young Lawyer — Pallavi Wahi: Wahi practices complex commercial litigation at K&L Gates, with an emphasis on corporate and intellectual property litigation, and is co-chair of the firm’s South Asia Initiative. Wahi is a former president of the South Asian Bar Association of Washington and a past trustee of the WSBA Young Lawyers Division.

Pro Bono Award — Norma Ureña: Ureña has been a volunteer for several KCBA programs representing clients in family law cases through the Family Law Mentor Program and wage claim clients through the Newcomers Resource Project. Her work with the Family Law Program has been exceptional. Ureña has represented many Spanish-speaking clients who face unique barriers in accessing the court system. She is a sole practitioner who, even without the resources of a big firm, continues to take on pro bono work in these tough economic times.

Dan Gandara will present the President’s Award to Ernie Aguilar, founder of the Washington State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
