The King County Bar Foundation’s annual Bar Scholar Reception was held on January 13 at the Seattle law offices of Dorsey & Whitney LLP. Approximately 70 guests, including donors, current and past recipients, Foundation board members, college faculty, and staff, were on hand for the special occasion.
Interim Dean Gregory Hicks of the University of Washington School of Law and Dean Kellye Testy of the Seattle University School of Law introduced the 2008/2009 recipients from their respective schools. The annual event provides a wonderful opportunity for Foundation trustees and other practicing attorneys to meet the current recipients and to mingle with a number of the minority lawyers who benefited from these scholarships in the past.
The Foundation is one of the largest providers of scholarships for minority law students in Washington. This past year, $128,000 was distributed to the University of Washington and Seattle University law schools for this purpose. More than 500 students have benefited from this program since it began in 1970 and more than 50 percent of these exceptional students are now practicing in King County.
The Minority Law Student Scholarships given annually by the Foundation represent one aspect of its three-pronged mission to increase diversity in the legal community, provide financial assistance to minority law students and increase retention of minority lawyers in King County law offices.
