June 2008 Bar Bulletin

Law Library

KCLL History in Video

By Marcus Hochstetler

Karen Sutherland

In 2003, during the seismic retrofit project in the Seattle courthouse, the law library temporarily moved to the Administration Building. The library embarked on a capital campaign to raise funds for upgrades to furniture and other renovation needs.

Thanks to the generous nature of the Seattle legal community, we were able to create a welcoming environment in the newly minted library setting in 2004. As part of our campaign, the staff, along with talented video technicians, helped to capture the library’s story and produce a documentary video of the services of the law library.

Our video, Without Access to Information, There Is No Justice, celebrates the 85th anniversary of the enabling statute for public law libraries in Washington. The video highlights services and features of the library and contains excerpts of interviews from eight library patrons and staff members.

Continuing in this vein of providing more information about our services, we are delighted to highlight some recent video projects developed with the help of Kim Hill, producer of the Justice Files program on King County Television (http://www.metrokc.gov/ctv). As part of the process, KCTV taped a short segment for the episode of Justice Files that discusses protection orders in King County. It also filmed a short public service announcement for our use in promotional materials.

We are proud of these efforts and hope you will take a few minutes to watch the videos available on our Web site at http://kcll.org/aboutus/publications/videos/index.html.
