John (Jack) Rankin, Jr., partner at Reed McClure, is one tough defense trial lawyer. He just set two state records in powerlifting at the USAPL Washington State Power-lifting Championships in Issaquah on March 16.
Rankin set the state squat record at 391 pounds, turned in a bench of 214 pounds and set the state record for the deadlift at 440 pounds for his age (60) and weight (181 pounds).
Rankin trains with Todd Christensen, owner of Seattle Strength and Power, who said, “This was pretty amazing because Jack has not competed in a full powerlifting meet for about nine years. He has been competing in WABDL competitions, which specialize in the bench and deadlift only. The squat is difficult for many lifters because it is technically demanding and hard on [the] knees.”
In addition to powerlifting, Rankin is an avid cyclist and frequently competes in RAMROD (Ride Around Mount Rainier in One Day), the Northwest’s premier one-day ultra-marathon cycling event. The ride of approximately 154 miles features 10,000 feet of grueling climbing, swooping descents and spectacular scenery if the weather cooperates.
In his spare time, this athlete practices law. Rankin has 30 years of litigation experience emphasizing defense of liability claims, including product liability, construction site accidents, construction defect and general liability claims. He also has defended a wide variety of professionals against malpractice lawsuits, including architects, engineers, attorneys, physicians, insurance and security brokers. Rankin received his J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law in 1975 after spending three years in the U.S. Navy from 1969–72.
