Washington’s minority bar associations are pleased to invite you to attend the Third Annual Statewide Diversity Conference. The event will kick off with a pre-conference reception honoring Washington’s diverse judges on Thursday evening, May 29, hosted by Perkins Coie LLP and Starbucks Coffee Company. The substantive portion of the conference will take place on May 30 at Seattle University School of Law.
The conference will feature a wide range of sessions on issues impacting diversity. The main plenary session, sponsored by the University of Washington School of Law, is entitled “Courtroom Bias: How Do Judges and Juries React to Diverse Counsel and Litigants?” and will include remarks from U.S. District Court Judge Ricardo Martinez, U.W. Psychology Prof. Cheryl Kaiser, Jeffery Robinson of Schroeter Goldmark and Bender, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jill Otake, and Ted Prosise of Tsongas Consulting. Panelists will address how issues of race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation affect the litigation process (including voir dire and jury deliberations).
In addition to the plenary, this year’s conference includes a three-session track on “Considering a Judicial Career” and a variety of concurrent sessions on topics ranging from the financial aspects of law firm partnership to overrepresentation of minority communities in the juvenile justice system. The conference also includes a luncheon co-sponsored by the WSBA Committee for Diversity and the Stoel Rives law firm that will feature a multi-media retrospective of diversity at WSBA and recognize early diverse attorneys and bar leaders.
A full conference schedule is available at www.wambac.org. Application for up to six live ethics credits is pending.
The conference is produced as a joint effort of the Asian Bar Association of Washington, GLBT Bar Association of Washington (QLaw), Korean American Bar Association of Washington, Latina/o Bar Association of Washington, Loren Miller Bar Association, Northwest Indian Bar Association, Pierce County Minority Bar Association, South Asian Bar Association of Washington, Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washing-ton, and Washington Women Lawyers, in cooperation with Seattle University School of Law.
