Tips for Reducing Your Carbon Footprint

You can be a part of the effort to reduce the carbon-based greenhouse gases that are causing climate changes. Here are a few easy tips for reducing your carbon footprint.

  • Tune up your home heating system.
  • Replace or remove aging and inefficient refrigerators and freezers.
  • Compost food waste.
  • Wear warm clothes in the winter instead of turning up the heat.
  • Close your curtains, drapes or blinds either to keep heat in during the winter or to keep the sun out during the summer.
  • Make sure power-saving “sleep” functions are enabled on computers.
  • Set your thermostat to 65 degrees during the day and 55 at night.
  • When replacing major appliances, buy the most efficient ones you can find.
  • Wash full loads of dishes and clothes using cold water if possible.
  • Install compact fluorescent light bulbs.
