Bar Talk

By Karen Sutherland

This month’s theme is “People,” which makes my life easy since “Bar Talk” is, after all, all about people. Additionally, April is the month where we honor the U.S. government by sending offerings to the Internal Revenue Service, followed by smaller offerings to King County for the honor of owning real property. April also marks the onset of power mower and weed wacker season, shattering the weekend calm and exacerbating the symptoms of hay fever sufferers everywhere. But enough for wandering off topic. Going back to that whole “people” theme, here’s the latest in goings-on about town:

New Partners and Shareholders

Russell King has been elected partner at Short Cressman & Burgess, where his practice will continue to focus on construction law and commercial litigation.

Jennifer Campbell has become a shareholder at Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt. Her practice focuses on product liability and complex tort litigation.

Paul Nordsletten has become a partner at Michael & Alexander PLLC. Nordsletten was formerly with Davis, Grimm, Payne & Marra. His practice focuses on employment and labor advice, counseling and litigation.

Magnus Andersson has become a shareholder at Hanson Baker Ludlow Drumheller P.S. Andersson’s practice focuses on real estate, construction, commercial law, appeals and creditor bankruptcy.

Associate Additions

Rebecca Anderson has become an associate at Graham & Dunn where she is part of the firm’s emerging companies and entrepreneurs team. Anderson focuses her practice on general corporate matters advising start-up and emerging companies.

Beginnings

Richard Aramburu and Jeffrey Eustis have formed the eponymously-entitled Aramburu & Eustis, LLP. Their office is located in the Pacific Building in downtown Seattle.

Aaron Rocke has formed the Rocke Law Group PLLC, which is located in Seattle across the street from the U.S. District Court. (Eponymousness seems to be a theme in law firm names this month.) The firm’s practice includes employment litigation, personal injury and estate planning.

Sheila Ridgway and Lisa Gafken have formed Ridgway and Gafken, P.S., which focuses on the litigation of estate, trust, guardianship and vulnerable adult matters and the administration of decedents’ estates and guardianships. Ridgway has served as chairperson of the King County Bar Association Probate Litigation and Ethics CLE for the last decade. Gafken was an assistant attorney general before entering private practice. Their office is located in the Bank of America Tower.

Appointments, Honors and Awards

The new building under construction at Harborview Medical Center on Ninth and Jefferson has been named after former King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng. It is scheduled to open later this year.

Irwin Sandman, the chair of Graham & Dunn’s Hospitality Industry Group, was named the 2008 recipient of the Anthony G. Marshall Hospitality Law Award. It is bestowed annually by the Board of the Hospitality Law Conference for pioneering and lasting contributions to the field of hospitality law.

Garvey Schubert Barer recently re-elected Anne Preston as the managing director of the firm’s Seattle office. Preston’s practice focuses on labor and employment law, alternative dispute resolution and litigation. The firm also announced the Seattle office appointments to the firm-wide Executive Committee, which include attorneys Lucinda Fernald, John Hoerster, Anne Preston, Mark Rowley and Sara Sanford.

Obituaries

John “Jack” Lombard recently died at the age of 89. After serving in World War II, he graduated from Northwestern Law School and was admitted to the Washington State Bar Association in 1949, clerked for Washington Supreme Court Justice Frederick Hamley and practiced law in Seattle for more than 50 years.

Karen Sutherland is the chair of the Employment and Labor Law Practice Group of Ogden Murphy Wallace, PLLC, and chair of the King County Bar Association Bar Bulletin Committee. Her practice focuses on employment and labor law and complex litigation. She can be reached at 1601 Fifth Ave., Suite 2100, Seattle, WA 98101, by fax at 206-447-0215 or by email at ksutherland@omlaw.com.
