The Right to Be Heard

    By Marcus Hochstetler

Karen Sutherland

In the wake of an economic recession, some in our society fall on hard times and need help. They find that they are unable to meet their obligations and face possible eviction from their homes. For the past 10 years, the volunteers of the KCBA’s Housing Justice Project have worked to help those in these situations by keeping them from becoming homeless. The public has come to trust in the court system through their work to uphold the right to be heard in court.

We were fortunate a year ago to welcome the HJP volunteers into the library to hold evening hours from 4–6 p.m. on Monday and Wednesdays. The partnership between their expertise and our resources has exceeded our expectations. It is then with sad hearts that we will see the evening sessions move from our space in April to newly expanded second-floor offices. We are grateful that we have been able to support such a vital program for those in need. We look forward to future cooperation with this and other KCBA programs.

You can become a volunteer for this program by contacting Orijit Ghoshal at 206-267-7028 and to learn more about available times. As always, you also can come to the library and seek out the self-help materials we have for both landlords and tenants to work out common issues. If you have any questions, give us a call at 206-296-0940.
