Judicial Candidate Evaluation Committee: Rates candidates for appointment or election to Municipal, District, Superior Courts; and to State Appellate Courts for contested elections. A three-year commitment is requested, as well as a commitment to participate in a minimum of 4 ratings sessions per year (usually half day). Committee members may not become a judicial candidate, nor support, contribute or participate in any judicial campaign, for one full year after leaving the committee. Lawyer members admitted to the highest court of one of the 50 states or District of Columbia for at least 3 years prior to joining the committee.
Activities: New (and returning) members attend an orientation session and an observation session before participating in screening meeting as a voting member. Half day meetings take place as needed to screen 2-3 candidates for election or appointment. Committee members interview references prior to the screening session. Members are appointed to staggered 3-year terms, with 1/3 of the members of the members leaving the committee each year. The committee includes both attorney and lay members.
