Family Law Mentor Program

If you are interested in volunteering, please visit our volunteers page for more information.

WHO WE SERVE

Family Law Mentor Program assists King County residents who are low-income married or unmarried parents with contested family law cases (dissolution or paternity cases) where children are at risk.

WHAT WE DO

The Family Law Mentor Program provides direct representation when the children are at risk because of domestic violence, child abuse/neglect, or alcohol/drug abuse.

Volunteer attorneys new to family law take these cases. They receive initial training and ongoing advice and support throughout the case from an experienced mentor attorney.

WHAT WE DO NOT DO

  • Emergencies (no cases close to trial)
  • Modifications of existing court orders
  • Post-Decree matters (after divorce is final)
  • Kinship/ 3rd party custody cases where someone other than the parent is caring for the child

WHERE, WHEN, and HOW TO REACH SERVICES

Call KCBA Lawyer Referral Service at (206) 267-7010, Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for a screening interview.
If your case is placed with a volunteer attorney, you and your attorney will make arrangements for appointments.

HOW TO PREPARE

  • Gather all related paperwork.
  • Decide on the desired outcome or goal.
  • Identify all deadlines.
  • Tell the intake screener about these deadlines.
  • Be prepared to tell the history of your legal issue to the intake screener over the phone.
