VAPWA (Volunteer Attorneys for Persons with HIV/AIDS)

WHO WE SERVE

  • People with HIV/AIDS in Washington State
  • All income levels (fees go from free to full fee depending on level of income)

WHAT WE DO

VAPWA provides referrals for legal assistance for eligible clients who meet the following requirements:
  • HIV+
  • Civil legal issue in Washington State

Case Types:

  • Bankruptcy (Chapter 7 only)
  • Consumer Issues (Contracts/Warrants)
  • Criminal Records Vacation
  • Debt Defense
  • Employment (Job Discrimination, Requests For Reasonable Accommodation)
  • Estate planning (Will, DPOA, Healthcare Directives)
  • Family Law (Custody/Visitation, Dissolution, Guardianship, Adoption, Support)
  • Health (Breach of Confidentiality, Insurance, Malpractice)
  • Housing (Landlord/Tenant, Evictions, Reasonable Accommodation, Habitability)
  • Immigration
  • Income Maintenance (Long-Term Disability Insurance Denials and Terminations, Unemployment Compensation, Labor and Industries)
  • Public benefits (Social Security Denials, Overpayments, Terminations)
  • Tort defense
Limited assistance in the following areas:
  • Immigration
  • Family law

WHAT WE DO NOT DO

We cannot help with the following type of legal issue:
  • Criminal
  • Suing another person or business for an issue unrelated to your HIV status

To be screened for a volunteer attorney, call (206) 461-3200 or simply dial 211 from within Washington State or email CLS@KCBA.org with "VAPWA" in the subject line.

HOW TO PREPARE

  • Gather all related paperwork.
  • Decide on the desired outcome or goal.
  • Identify all deadlines.
  • Tell the intake screener about these deadlines.
  • Be prepared to tell the history of your legal issue to the intake screener over the phone.
