KCBA regrets to report the December 11 passing of Jack Scholfield, who served as KCBA President from 1971-1972.

After earning a B.S. in education in 1941, he enlisted in the Navy to fight during World War II. After the war, Judge Scholfield received his law degree in 1948 from the University of Washington. He spent almost thirty years in private practice before being appointed to King County Superior Court in 1977, where he served as presiding judge. He later went on to serve on the Washington Court of Appeals from 1982-1995, and then served as a private mediator and arbitrator with JAMS until 2011.

Bruce Pym, 1984-1985 KCBA President, offered this memory about Judge Scholfield: "I met Jack around or shortly after the time that he became president of what was then the Seattle-King County Bar Association. His law firm focused on trial work, and both Jack and his firm were well regarded for their integrity as well as their abilities. Jack was consistently gracious and courteous. And he had wry sense of humor that the rest of us found engaging."

Richard Manning, 1995-1996 KCBA President, shared these thoughts: "I remember him first when he was a defense trial lawyer with Hal Willits, George Guttormsen and Bob Ager; then his successful career as a jurist. I did a lot of plaintiffs’ (and defendants’) litigation in those days so I encountered Jack a lot. He was a very likeable down to earth guy whose word was solid gold. I wish there were more like him today!"

Mark Swanson, a staff attorney at the Court of Appeals, served as Judge Scholfield's law clerk. He noted that "I was struck by his kindness and dedication to his work. Whenever I worked over a weekend, he was there, digging into his cases and smiling as he did it. He was as thorough and dedicated a judge as I have seen in my 30 years at the court. Judge Scholfield was an inspiration to me and a shining example for all who aspire to serve in the judiciary."
