JOSEPH E. BRINGMAN
CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

KCBA was founded in 1886, first and foremost, to censure attorneys who supported and even participated in riots and vigilante actions aimed at the forced expulsion of Chinese immigrants. Today, 125 years later, KCBA remains a leading voice and a pillar of support for those who need legal help and have few other places to turn. KCBA accomplishes this through its many pro bono programs, its unwavering support for equal access to justice, its programs that promote diversity in the legal profession, and its willingness to tackle difficult and sometimes contentious legal issues and to speak out publicly on them when it is right to do so.

KCBA also plays a prominent role in efforts to improve the justice system. Among other things, it collaborates with the courts to enact better judicial procedures and to maintain and even enhance court services in times of financial constraints, collects and provides constructive feedback to judges who desire to upgrade their performance, disseminates to voters its evaluations of judges and candidates for judicial office, hosts candidate forums for contested judicial and other law-related positions, augments lawyer competence by offering CLE programs and providing substantive sections in which members may participate, produces publications that help attorneys and lay persons to navigate the legal system, and promotes both collegiality and diversity in our profession.

I am proud of KCBA's many accomplishments—and those described above barely touch the surface—and the dedicated members and staff who make them happen. I am proud to be a KCBA member and a small part of this great, 125-year tradition.

It is a privilege, moreover, to have received the opportunity over the years to participate actively in KCBA: to serve on and/or chair KCBA committees; to participate in and/or lead task forces that addressed such issues as equal rights for same-sex couples, redistricting of the King County District Court, expanded jurisdiction of our Fair Campaign Practices Committee to cover statements of "527" committees, and the vitality of our lawyer referral service; to author for many years a chapter in the Washington Lawyers' Practice Manual; to serve as a trustee and in every officer position except Treasurer; and now to be nominated for President.

Over the coming year, I look forward to building on KCBA's historic mission of service to the profession and the community, of speaking out on legal issues of substantial importance, and to enriching the professional lives of you, our members, by offering the opportunities and services you seek.

On a more personal note, my wife and I live in Seattle's Maple Leaf neighborhood, along with two teenagers, three cats and a Golden Retriever. My professional home for over 25 years has been Perkins Coie, where my focus is on complex commercial litigation, including securities defense and insurance coverage matters. In addition to my work with KCBA, my legal extracurriculars include stints as an ACLU cooperating attorney, a director of the Perkins Coie Community Fellowship Program, and a frequent moot court judge at the University of Washington School of Law.

We have much to celebrate in this, KCBA's 125th anniversary year. But we dare not rest on our laurels. Especially in harsh economic times, KCBA has an essential role to play in responding to the challenges that face the profession, the courts, those who need legal assistance, and the broader community. I urge your suggestions, your help, and your involvement.

RICHARD E. MITCHELL
CANDIDATE FOR FIRST VICE PRESIDENT
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

It would be my honor and privilege to serve our community by bringing my passion for public service to the role of KCBA's First Vice President.

KCBA provides us with a wonderful opportunity to promote a just legal system and instill professionalism within our bar, through continuing its rich tradition of social justice. We can, among many things, work to increase funding for legal services, expand and support diversity within our bar, strengthen our justice system, and inform public debates on civil and criminal issues. Above all, we can and should work to ensure that everyone has access to the justice system.

Along with many other legal service providers, KCBA has experienced decreased revenues over successive years, which has compelled it to make tough budget decisions while searching for greater efficiencies. These decisions have put into focus the need to develop alternative ways to fulfill KCBA's mission.

As the economy picks up, KCBA will need to develop new and complementary revenue streams, as well as new service delivery methods that allow it to more effectively compete. The task is certainly daunting. But it would be my honor to serve our community on KCBA's Board of Trustees in working to address the challenge.

Thank you for your consideration.

ANNE M. DALY
CANDIDATE FOR SECOND VICE PRESIDENT
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

It is a privilege and honor to have been nominated for the position of Second Vice-President of the King County Bar Association. As an active member of KCBA, I am aware of the strong, vital work being done by members in sections and committees, by volunteers in the many pro bono and diversity programs and by the board during these challenging economic times. As Second Vice-President, maintaining these high quality programs would be a priority.

For the past 21 years I have been fortunate to work at Society of Counsel Representing Accused Persons, a private non-profit law firm that provides public defense services. Having spent my entire career in public sector law, access to justice is an issue near and dear to my heart. Assisting KCBA in advocating for appropriate levels of funding and access to justice issues will remain a primary goal.

Additionally, I have been active in the King County Bar Association having served on the board of trustees, as a member and co-chair of the judicial screening committee, as a member of the ethnic diversity committee, and as a member and chair of the awards committee. I have served as a FLI mentor and as a volunteer attorney with VAPWA and the Housing Justice Project.

I remain committed to helping KCBA remain one of the most vital, active and responsive voluntary bar associations in the country and would greatly appreciate your consideration and support.

Andrew W. Maron
CANDIDATE FOR SECOND VICE PRESIDENT
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

KCBA has performed many great services to its members, the legal and judicial professions, and the public for 125 years. Yet, now only half of King County lawyers are members of KCBA, and many fewer than that are involved in its committees, sections, and functions. Worse, membership in KCBA is not growing.

I would like to help change that. So, my question to everyone who reads this is: What do you want KCBA to do in the future? Let me know at amaron@scblaw.com.

I like working with lawyers. I find lawyers to be dedicated, slightly idealistic problem solvers who seek to make our society a better place, in their own practices and in their community. That is why I have devoted a significant amount of my non-work time to KCBA activities.

KCBA Activities. I have enjoyed serving on many KCBA committees and boards during the past 30 years. Most significant were the following:

Member, KCBA Board of Trustees

Chair, KCBA Awards Committee

Chair, KCBA Judicial Conferencing Committee

Chair, KCBA Judicial Evaluation Committee

Chair, KCBA Public Information Committee

Member and Vice-Chair, KCBA Young Lawyers Board of Trustees

Goals. I have two primary goals for KCBA: (1) emphasizing membership services that directly benefit as many lawyers as possible; and (2) supporting the judicial system during times of extraordinary budget cutbacks. As the economy continues to impact governments, non-profits (like KCBA), businesses, and individuals, improving these two areas will be a challenge for all of us in KCBA.

Law-Related Activities.

- Since 1978, I have been with Short Cressman & Burgess PLLC as a commercial litigator. My primary area of focus has been construction, real estate, and business litigation. I also currently serve as the firm's Managing Partner.
- Prior to joining Short Cressman, I spent four years as a U.S. Army JAG, practicing mostly criminal law.
- From 1978-94, I was a U.S. Army Reserve JAG, serving as a Military Judge among other duties.
- I have served for many years on the Council of the WSBA Construction Section, including a one-year term as its Chair.
- For five years, I taught a variety of legal courses as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Puget Sound's School of Business and Public Administration.
- I have been admitted to the South Carolina, Washington, and several federal bars.

Civic Activities.

- Washington State Local Governance Study Commission Member
- Kitsap County Public Facilities District Board of Directors
- Kitsap County Board of Freeholders
- City of Bainbridge Island Councilmember and Interim Mayor
- Bloedel Reserve Board of Directors
- Seattle Downtown YMCA Board of Management
- Children's Home Society of Washington Board of Directors

Personal.

- I am a West Point graduate (B.S.) with four years of service in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer in the U.S., Vietnam, and Germany.
- I received a J.D. from the University of South Carolina and an LL.M. from the University of Virginia.
- I am married with five children and now grandchildren!

ALAN S. FUNK
CANDIDATE FOR SECRETARY/TRUSTEE
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

Practicing law has been my passion for the last 18 years. Seeking ways to improve our legal system became my hobby after I attended my first bench-bar conference in 2004. I discovered abundant opportunities to become involved. Since that time, working alongside amazing lawyers, judges and commissioners on committees has been my privilege.

I believe the primary function of the King County Bar Association is to support its member attorneys. The bar acts as our primary conduit to communicate with the courts, the legislature and the public. To perform this task well, the bar association needs member input and participation. My goal as a candidate is simple: To guide the bar to greater participation. A lot can be accomplished when a group of intelligent, thoughtful attorneys are inspired. There is a lot of work to do, but many hands make light work. Thank you to the nomination committee for their vote of confidence.

MICHAEL R. WRENN
CANDIDATE FOR SECRETARY/TRUSTEE
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

I am very honored to be nominated by the King County Bar Association for the position of Secretary/Trustee. It would be a privilege to continue to serve our bar and our community as KCBA Secretary and a member of the leadership team.

My involvement with the KCBA started right out of law school in 1980, when I volunteered for the Southwest Legal Clinic. I later acted as the volunteer coordinator for the clinic and continued my work for over 10 years. In 1992, I was elected as a Trustee to the King County Bar Foundation and served as its President in 2000-2001. My work as a volunteer attorney and with the Foundation highlighted for me the very valuable service provided by the KCBA, not only to its members, but the greater community. It is a very proud tradition which I will always support. As a member of the executive team I hope to encourage broader support from other bar members and from the community for the programs and initiatives of the KCBA.

PAMELA A. GRINTER
CANDIDATE FOR TREASURER

I am honored to run for the position of Treasurer. I would be pleased to serve such an important organization. Sound fiscal management is especially critical in these challenging economic times to ensure that the KCBA is able to continue providing excellent programs supporting our community and our profession.

Financial Experience: As a former CPA, I have served as Treasurer of several nonprofit organizations including Provail, a large organization serving people with disabilities, New Beginnings, an organization benefiting battered women and their children, and Trust for Working Landscapes, an organization supporting farming on Bainbridge Island. I was a founder and the first Treasurer for Washington Attorneys Assisting Community Organizations, an organization that provides business lawyers pro bono opportunities with nonprofit organizations. I have been a member of the finance committees for the Woodland Park Zoo and Seattle Children's Theatre.

Bar Association Experience: I have been actively involved with the KCBA, the WSBA and the ABA, including KCBA Young Lawyers Division Trustee, WSBA Business Law Section Chair, WSBA YLD President, state delegate to the ABA House of Delegates and participation on many KCBA committees.

KAREN OREHOSKI
CANDIDATE FOR TREASURER
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

I am a senior associate at Ricci Grube Breneman, PLLC, where I represent both individuals and institutional clients in litigation matters. I have been honored to serve the King County Bar Association first as Co-Chair of the Young Lawyers Services Committee and later as a Trustee and Chair of the Young Lawyers Division Board of Trustees. I currently volunteer with KCBA's Membership Committee. In my past and current work with the KCBA I have demonstrated my commitment to making KCBA more relevant to its members.

During my three year tenure on the KCBA YLD Board of Trustees, I brought many new programs to the YLD, including new volunteer opportunities for young lawyers, new networking opportunities through monthly social hours, and new professional opportunities through free monthly CLEs. I will bring this same enthusiasm to the KCBA Board of Trustees.

As KCBA Treasurer, I will work with KCBA staff to ensure that funds are properly accounted for and I will ensure that you are getting maximum value from your membership dues. I have sought leadership positions in the KCBA in the past, and am running for Treasurer today, because I believe I have a responsibility to use my education, influence, and voice to promote social justice and better our profession. KCBA has allowed me to do this and I will work toward making KCBA as relevant to all its members' careers as it has been to mine.

I am enthusiastic to continue serving you and I hope you will allow me to serve as KCBA Treasurer.

GEOFFREY M. BOODELL
CANDIDATE FOR CENTRAL DISTRICT TRUSTEE

In this era of tightening budgets and falling tax revenues, it is more vital than ever that we maintain a vibrant membership to sustain the vitality of our organization, enhance professionalism amongst the bench and bar and continue our strong presence on both the local and state level for assuring affordable access to justice.

It has been my privilege to serve the King County Bar Association in leadership roles over the course of my career, including service as:

  • Chair, KCBA Labor & Employment Law Section.

TAMARA K. NELSON
CANDIDATE FOR CENTRAL DISTRICT TRUSTEE
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

I am honored to receive a nomination to serve on the KCBA Board of Trustees. I look forward to the possibility of serving on the board of directors of our local bar association as a representative of our legal community and to all who depend on our legal system.

I am a graduate of the UW with a B.A. in Political Science (1994), and earned my J.D. from Seattle University in 1997. Since becoming a member of the Bar, I have practiced nearly exclusively in King County in a wide variety of areas including plaintiff employment and tort, juvenile and adult criminal defense and general civil defense; all of which provided me with great insight to our profession, local issues and community. I have worked primarily as a civil defense litigator for the past 10 years, and am currently a shareholder with Merrick, Hofstedt & Lindsey. I currently serve as the Chair of the King County Bar Association Fair Campaign Practices Committee; and sit on the Board of Lawyers Helping Hungry Children, a local non-profit organization committed to ending childhood hunger in King County and across the State.

It is my extraordinary good fortune to have received this nomination; and I believe that my professional experience and community service will be a great benefit to the organization. The King County Bar Association embodies the very best of our profession. I would be honored to serve.

D. JILL PUGH
CANDIDATE FOR CENTRAL DISTRICT TRUSTEE
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

I have enjoyed my time on the Board of Trustees as the appointee to fill the spot vacated by Judge Spearman after his appointment to the Court of Appeals. I am honored to be nominated to run for a full term and hope to build upon this experience. I received my first packet of KCBA membership materials the same day I was sworn in at the King County Courthouse in November 1994 – and ever since then, to me, being a lawyer in King County has meant being a member of the KCBA. I appreciate how KCBA works to meet the needs of its members and also provides tremendous value to the public in King County through its variety of pro bono programs. I am proud to be a member of such an organization, and look forward to continuing this tradition of service and working to bring the KCBA into the 21st Century, making the most of modern technology's tools to keep the organization in touch with members and relevant to their needs.

Thank you for your support.

MICHAEL E. RICKETTS
CANDIDATE FOR CENTRAL DISTRICT TRUSTEE
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

I've been an active member of the KCBA for many years, am a past member of the Judiciary and the Courts Committee, and have for the past several years chaired the Judicial Evaluation Committee. These and other activities that focus on our judicial system (such as the Bench-Bar Conference and the Judicial Selection Committee) are a particular strength of the KCBA, and provide a valuable service not only to the legal profession but to anyone concerned with access to or the administration of justice. The work of a local voluntary bar association like the KCBA helps lawyers be able to lay claim to working at a profession rather than in an occupation. Its efforts become all the more important in light of the budget constraints and other challenges our public institutions, profession, and community have faced the past few years.

I'd like to think I can help continue the KCBA's long history of spearheading efforts by its members to serve their profession and the community. I've been in private practice since graduating from the University of Washington Law School in 1979, doing civil litigation and appeals with an emphasis on insurance coverage matters and product liability defense work. I am a partner at the Seattle office of Gordon Thomas Honeywell. In addition to my KCBA activities, I am a Member of the American Bar Association (Litigation and Tort Trial & Insurance Practice sections), the Defense Research Institute, and the Washington Defense Trial Lawyers.

I am a native of Seattle and received my undergraduate education at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. My wife, Kim, and I live in Seattle's University Park neighborhood and have three grown children.

SUSAN H. AMINI
CANDIDATE FOR EAST DISTRICT TRUSTEE
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

I am honored to be nominated to serve as KCBA's Trustee for the East District. I have practiced law in Washington for over 20 years, and since 1994 have focused my Bellevue-based solo practice on Family and Immigration law. As an active member of the KCBA for 16 years, I have served on the Judicial Screening Committee, and have worked for years with the KCBA's Immigration Clinic, which I chaired from 2003 to 2005.

I have served as a Judge Pro Tempore in King County District Court since 1994 and a Hearing Officer for the WSBA since 2004. I have also served as a Human Services Commissioner for the City of Bellevue, as a Trustee of the Overlake Hospital Foundation, and on Bellevue's Probation Advisory Board.

Running for King County Superior Court Judge afforded me an unparalleled opportunity to meet my fellow King County lawyers, and to appreciate the critical role KCBA plays in our community. From fostering diversity in our law schools and educating young people about the benefits and responsibilities of legal practice, to delivering high quality CLE programming to its members and legal services to those in need through its rich clinical offerings, the King County Bar Association is a model for private bar associations around the country. As your Trustee, I would work with the staff and the Board to steward an organization that is dedicated to our shared values of diversity, professionalism, and access to justice, while remaining fiscally responsible with member dues and contributions.

MICHAEL T. CALLAN
CANDIDATE FOR EAST DISTRICT TRUSTEE
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

It has been a privilege to serve on the Board of Trustees for the King County Bar Association and I would be honored to continue as a Trustee.

The King County Bar Association has played a dynamic role in our legal community over the years, including providing valuable services to its members, supplying leadership in pro bono and access to justice programs, increasing diversity and setting standards for professionalism within the bench and bar. My goal is to continue to contribute to this exceptional organization by focusing on ways the King County Bar Association can improve its membership and services to its members while continuing to serve those in our community. The King County Bar Association truly makes a difference and I look forward to continuing to serve with its other trustees and staff.

I am a partner in the Bellevue based firm of Peterson Russell Kelly PLLC. My practice includes commercial, employment and real estate litigation. I have been a longtime member of the East King County Bar Association, previously serving on its judicial evaluation committee and participating in the Eastside Legal Assistance Program. I currently serve on the King County Bar Association lawyer referral committee. I live in Issaquah with my wife of 18 years and my three children ages 17, 14 and 8.

BOYD F. BUCKINGHAM
CANDIDATE FOR SOUTH DISTRICT TRUSTEE
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

For thirty-one years, I have been a sole practitioner in Renton and have had substantial experience in bankruptcy, misdemeanor defense, family law, personal injury and general business. Over this long period of time, the quality of our King County courts and the professionalism of the lawyers have always impressed me. A member of the KCBA and the SKCBA since 1980, I have been active in providing pro bono services in South King County and currently participate in SKCBA's pro bono mediation program. In the community, I was a youth athletic coach for many years and spent several years raising Guide Dogs for the Blind. I have also spent considerable time working with my wife in support of the Eastside Domestic Violence Program.

My practice has narrowed down to family law, personal injury and automobile dealership law. Having built substantial trust from colleagues over the years, almost half of my time is spent mediating or arbitrating disputes in these practice areas. I have come to appreciate the zealousness of practitioners, but have also become acutely aware that there is a need to promote respect and good will between the practitioners which ultimately benefit our clients and ourselves. As public resources become scarcer, I believe in early alternative dispute resolution such as the Court's pilot program and the increasing use of mediation, arbitration and collaborative law. Trials should be the last resort, after all other good faith efforts are exhausted and I will work to promote those ideals.

JOHN DAVIDS HUHS
CANDIDATE FOR SOUTH DISTRICT TRUSTEE
KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

I would be honored to serve as the South King County delegate to the KCBA Board of Trustees. Since being admitted to practice, I have taken every opportunity and initiative to serve the South King County community and local bar association. My service to the community extends to volunteering at two neighborhood legal clinics, the Kent general clinic and SE Seattle debt clinic, and serving as a Director and Treasurer of Kent Youth and Family Services. In addition, I had the pleasure and good fortune of serving on the South King County Bar Association's Board and being elected its President in 2008.

If elected as trustee to the King County Bar Association, I promise to further the KCBA's mission of access to justice and public service and to look for ways that the KCBA can better collaborate and partner with local, state, and specialty bars to enhance member services. My interest in serving as a trustee comes from the enjoyment of working with other volunteer attorneys to make our bar and legal community stronger. I am constantly impressed by my fellow volunteers, and I promise to give the same effort, energy, and dedication to this position that you give in your volunteer activities. I would be honored to have your vote.
