    Work Study Positions

    Volunteer Attorneys for Persons with AIDS (VAPWA) and Newcomers Resource Project Work Study Position

    The King County Bar Association (KCBA) is a private membership organization of legal professionals. Members participate in various activities aimed at providing professional development opportunities for attorneys and improving the legal system in King County. The KCBA has a long-term commitment to providing legal services to King County residents who cannot afford an attorney through our pro bono programs. We are currently seeking a work-study student or intern to work for the VAPWA (Volunteer Attorneys for Persons with HIV/AIDS) program and the Newcomers Project. VAPWA provides access to free, reduced fee, and full fee legal services to persons living with HIV/ AIDS. The Newcomers Resource Project coordinates and directs newcomers, immigrants and refugees to the legal resources available in King County as well as providing legal education workshops and direct representation in wage claim cases. The focus of this program is to provide access to civil legal assistance in areas other than immigration.

    Volunteer Opportunities

    Family Law Mentor Program
    Administrative Volunteer - academic year only
    The Family Law Mentor Program facilitates the representation of low-income clients in contested dissolution of marriage or parentage proceedings where the children’s safety is an issue. Inexperienced family law attorneys are matched with mentoring attorneys for the successful completion of cases. A volunteer position exists for one individual interested in family law and willing to provide administrative support to staff members and volunteering attorneys. The volunteer is asked to make a commitment of 6-8 hours per week for an extended period of time.

    Housing Justice Project (HJP) and HJP P.M. Volunteer Legal Assistants
    The Housing Justice Project is a homelessness prevention program that offers legal advice, negotiations, and representation to low-income tenants facing eviction. Walk-in clinics are open at the Kent RJC and King County Courthouse (downtown Seattle) on weekday mornings and Monday and Wednesday afternoons (Seattle only). Volunteer legal assistants are responsible for opening and closing the project offices, conducting client intakes, completing HJP and court forms, and providing administrative support to volunteer attorneys. Training is provided, and legal assistants are asked to commit to one morning or afternoon per week for at least a quarter/semester.

    Neighborhood Legal Clinics (NLC)
    Volunteer Clinic Assistants
    Neighborhood Legal Clinics offer “legal triage” in the form of free 30-minute one-on-one consultations at 25 clinics across King County. Clinic assistants help with the intake of the clients; maintain the flow of the client schedule during the clinic; provide research and referral assistance for the clients and/or attorneys; and inventory, order, and stock clinic supplies. This is a one-year commitment for one 2-hour shift every 6 to 8 weeks depending on the clinic.

    Administrative Volunteer
    Neighborhood Legal Clinics offer “legal triage” in the form of free 30-minute one-on-one consultations at 25 clinics across King County. A volunteer position exists for one individual committed to public service and willing to assist the program manager and phone scheduler with administrative support. Applicants should be willing to make a 10-week commitment and have strong organizational and computer skills. Daytime schedule is flexible.
