Proposed 2017 Changes to Superior Court Local Rules

King County Superior Court published March 1 its annual proposed update to local court rules; changes would be effective September 1, 2017. Among the changes proposed are requirements that (1) attorneys provide their clients with copies of the court's case schedule and (2) an additional attestation for certain parenting plans in family law cases. KCBA's Judiciary & Litigation Committee and Family Law Section are reviewing these and other proposed changes; if warranted KCBA will transmit a comment letter to the court.

A copy of the proposed rule changes is online at www.kingcounty.gov/courts/clerk/rules/Comment.aspx.

WA Chief Justice Expresses Concerns About Immigration Agents in State Courthouses

Washington Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Fairhurst shared concerns with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security March 22 over increasing reports of federal immigration law enforcement officers appearing in state courthouses to take into custody certain immigrants. "The fear of apprehension by immigration officials deters individuals from accessing our courthouses and erodes ...trust, even for those with lawful immigration status," said Fairhurst. More information about the letter is online at www.courts.wa.gov/newsinfo/?fa=newsinfo.pressdetail&newsid=12657.
