 Judge McDermott Announces Retirement

King County Superior Court Judge Richard F. McDermott announced October 10 that he will retire from the bench effective January 1, 2018.  Governor Inslee will appoint a replacement judge; applications to the Governor were due by November 9.  More information is online at www.kcba.org/For-Lawyers/Judicial-Resources/Current-Judicial-Openings.


Improving Access to and Safety Around the King County Courthouse

The King County Bar Association Board of Trustees approved a resolution September 20 calling on the Metropolitan King County Council to improve the safety and cleanliness of the area adjacent to the downtown Seattle Courthouse and to reopen the Fourth Avenue entrance.  A copy of the resolution is available at www.kcba.org/publicpolicy.


KCBA Admonishes Court of Appeals Candidate Nathan Choi

On November 3 judicial candidate Nathan Choi was found to have violated KCBA's Fair Campaign Practices Guidelines. The Association is forwarding formal complaints to the Commission on Judicial Conduct and the Public Disclosure Commission. Call for Nominations for 2017 Mentor of the Year

Do you have a mentor that deserves to be recognized for the time, teaching, and training they’ve given you? We invite you to nominate them for the 2017 Outstanding Mentor Award. All finalists will be recognized at the YLD Winter Soirée on February 8th, where the winner will be announced. To nominate a mentor, submit an explanation of why you think your mentor deserves the award (no more than 1 full page, no less than 2 paragraphs) to Anna at AnnaR@kcba.org. Please include at least two specific examples to illustrate your point. We will follow up with each nominator to get a fuller picture of the mentoring relationship. Nominators must be current YLD members, defined as a lawyer 36 years old or under or in the first five years of practice, whichever comes later. The deadline to submit a nomination is Tuesday, January 9th.

Help Provide Cold-Weather Necessities to Those in Need

The YLD Community Involvement Committee has planned an event to put together Care Kits for Seattle’s homeless. We’ll be collecting items at KCBA from now until Monday, December 11th. Donate using our Amazon Wish List or drop off bottles of water, granola bars, crackers, socks and gloves, etc. at the KCBA offices.

If you wish to pick up a kit (or two or three) to distribute, they will be available at KCBA beginning December 14th and until supplies run out.

Pro Bono Services

Volunteers Needed for New Vacating Records Project

KCBA’s Pro Bono Services has an exciting new project, the Records Project, which is funded through the generous support of the United Way of King County.  This project focuses on helping clients who have a criminal record which is preventing them from finding housing or employment and therefore keeping them in poverty.  New attorneys are welcome and will receive mentorship and support throughout the case.
