Seattle City Attorney Candidate Forum October 12

Voters will decide in November who will serve as city attorney, and KCBA will provide the public with an opportunity to meet the candidates. The bar will host Peter Holmes and Scott Lindsay for a candidate forum at 12:00pm on October 12 at KCBA's office.  Lunch will be provided.  The event will be live streamed on KCBA's website and available for later viewing as well.  The City Attorney is Seattle's chief legal officer who oversees a 90 attorney office responsible for representing the city in lawsuits and prosecuting misdemeanors in Municipal Court.  Visit www.kcba.org for more details as the event gets closer.

 

 

 

$1.5 Million Legal Defense Fund Recipients for Immigrants & Refugees Announced

 

Over the course of two weeks, a panel that included members from the immigrant and refugee legal defense community, King County staff, and City of Seattle staff reviewed both written applications and oral presentations from community-based organizations offering immigrants legal services, guidance, and or/referrals to legal services.  $1.5 million will be awarded to six nonprofit organizations including the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project.  Additional details are online at knkx.org/post/seattle-announces-recipients-legal-defense-fund-immigrants.

 

 

Lawyers Licensed Outside Texas Can Provide Help To Harvey Victims

 

The Texas Supreme Court issued an emergency order August 29 allowing out-of-state lawyers to practice in the state temporarily to provide pro bono assistance to Hurricane Harvey victims. Out-of-state lawyers in good standing can now practice in Texas for six months in two situations.

Wiggins of the Washington State Supreme Court.

 

 

Public Law Library of King County: Legal Help Center

The Law Library is looking for volunteer attorneys to help staff the Legal Help Center in Seattle from now through October 13th. This is a clinic that provides free, limited legal help to pro se patrons.  Volunteer attorneys assist clients by explaining legal issues and helping to draft pleadings to either initiate or respond to legal proceedings. Volunteer Opportunity – Become a Content Editor for the Washington Lawyers Practice Manual

YLD Trivia Night – October 25th

Enjoy drinks, snacks, and some friendly competition at this year’s YLD Trivia Night at Fado Irish Pub. Event starts at 7:15pm, with trivia kicking off at 7:30pm. Geeks Who Drink will host the event and prizes will be given for the highest score, lowest score, and best team name. Keep an eye out—registration will open soon!

 

 

Family Law Mentor Program

 

The Family Law Mentor Program offers new attorneys or attorneys new to family law the opportunity to represent a client in a family law case and make a difference in the life of a domestic violence survivor. Attorneys are expected to take the case through completion, and are supported by a mentoring attorney and the managing attorney of the program as they take on direct representation of a client in a contested dissolution or parenting plan case.

Looking Ahead-October Bar Bulletin

The upcoming issue of our monthly newspaper is headed to the printer but we can preview a few highlights for you. The theme is "rights II" and topics include a look at the new electronic case management upgrades happening in King County District Court, a review of a lawsuit aimed at upholding military transgender rights, a profile on women's rights advocate Janet Chung, and much more.  The Bar Bulletin will be mailed to members on October 2.  Issues are also available online at www.kcba.org/barbulletin.

Volunteer Legal Services (VLS) is looking for experienced pro bono attorneys to provide direct representation in the following areas of law: Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, Consumer Debt Defense, Vacating Criminal Records, and Estate Planning.
