According to a publication of the Association for Conflict Resolution, mediation and arbitration were first used in the Mari Kingdom in Syria to resolve disputes with other kingdoms in 1800 B.C.1 George Washington included an arbitration clause in his will in 1770.2
Modern dispute resolution programs trace their establishment to the series of Global Pound Conferences (GPC). These conferences began in 1906 and leave a legacy of self-reflection on such questions as:
• How well does our system of justice work?
• Can human beings effectively, efficiently and fairly resolve the conflicts that inevitably emerge among us?
