I keep reading articles about jobs that will soon be performed by computers using artificial intelligence, and lawyers are on the list of people who will be replaced by AI. I wonder how this applies in real life to real clients. I thought we would become obsolete when case law, statutes, regulations and law review articles became readily accessible on the internet, but that didn’t happen. At least in my practice area (employment law and workplace investigations) there is a substantial component of the practice that requires an understanding of human nature and emotional intelligence that I suspect cannot be delivered by a computer anytime soon.
