With increasing momentum, solar photovoltaic, solar heating, and concentrated solar thermal systems are becoming an integral and vibrant component of the global economy. Coupled with regular scientific and engineering breakthroughs, the robust demand for solar energy has encouraged the total shipments of U.S. solar photovoltaic firms to increase dramatically in recent decades.

However, despite a steady increase in energy demand, only about 2 percent of our nation’s energy needs are provided by solar energy.1 This is a stark contrast to 1979 projections that predicted 25 percent of the national energy demand would be met by solar energy sources...
