Washington’s new Paid Family and Medical Leave Act (“PFMLA”) is here. Beginning January 1, 2020, most employees* are entitled to receive paid leave of between 12 and 18 weeks per year, depending on the circumstances. PFMLA is a state-run insurance program through the Employment Security Department (ESD) that provides a partial wage replacement of up to $1,000 per week. Employers should have already begun reporting employee information and remitting premiums to ESD in 2019. Here’s what else you should know as this law takes effect in 2020.
